Open Kvarken 2009 Summary
Open Kvarken through the past year has been testing and evaluating several open source projects that local companies and municipalities could benefit from. Some of our most interesting subprojects have been implemented in companies and municipalities in both Finland and Sweden.
The following Virtual Server projects have been tested:
OpenMeetings, a web based conference system that does not require any installations. It runs on our servers in both Finland and Sweden, making it available and open to the public for testing. Local companies are participating in further developments and testing. We anticipate that during 2010 there will emerge local vendors selling services and support for OpenMeetings.
Moodle, an E-learning platform that is in use in several Universities introduced to undergraduate education.
Föräldramötet is a portal for communication between teachers and parents. It allows parents to easily check up happenings, homework assignments, problems etc concerning their child/ren in the nursery or school.
WebSurvey, web interface and system for online surveys or data collection. Has also been developed for a municipality.
IPTV pre-study has been done.
Webapplet, a Web applet and tunneling function has been developed by Sesca in cooperation with JNT and the Open Kvarken project. The tunneling function is published at the Kamailio community and will be adapted to the Ekiga community. This new function will be implemented in Ekiga during 2010.
Eduvom, a sub-project in the municipality of Vöro-Maxmo where Open Kvarken is designing a complete IT- infrastructure based on Open-Source. Using Xen for virtual machines, the project also includes Ubuntu as desktop, Ldap for authentication, NFS (Network File Server) for file sharing, Openmeetings for web conferences and virtual classrooms. Others include Moodle as E-learning platform linked with Openmeetings,Zimbra used for email system, and Joomla for their Eduvom.fi portal (with LAMP as base).
In the case of seminars, a total of four seminars were held during 2009 with the Topics: "Open source och Windows"; "Open source, licenser, affärsmodeller och juridik"; "VOIP seminar in Vasa"; and "Umeå Open Sourcekonferens". Some of these are available online.
Concerning education in Open Source, new courses are planned. They will be part of the educational program in both Vaasa University of Applied Sciences and Umeå University.
Specifications have been made for a Co-operatives web shop named Webshop for Co-operatives, and will probably be developed during 2010.
Debian packaging of Openmeetings has been started and is scheduled to be finished by the 1st quarter of 2010. A Debian package is also planned for Föräldramötet.
These are some of the activities undertaken during 2009, for more information about any specifics do not hesitate to contact us.
